about

Here's a song I (Nazel Pickens) wrote when I got tired of hearin' what passes as "country" music on the radio these days. Although I ain't no purest, I do have a love for the legacy of classic, honky tonk, and outlaw country....here's our tribute to those boots we ain't tryin' to fill, just stomp 'round a bit!

lyrics

Closin’ Down The Honky Tonks
(Nazel Pickens)

They’re closin’ down the honky tonks
Don’t play Hank no more
Lefty felt just too left out
He went on out that door

They’re closin’ down the honky tonks
Can’t find no juke box
Nobody two-steps ‘round here
The bars are made for jocks

Well, I’m a refugee from suburbia
The wilds of Jersey land
Only get us cowboys there
When Bon Jovi and the boss pretend

Somewhere on down the line
Gram kidnapped my soul
Ol’ Merle he knocked me out
I woke up on this road

Now I’m feelin’ unwanted
More dead than alive
Gotta get back in the saddle
On that ol’ steel horse and ride

‘Cause, they’re closin’ down the honky tonks
Don’t play Hank no more
Lefty felt just too left out
He went on out that door

It was a honky tonk angel
Kissed me on the lips
That sweet Loretta gal
She made me shake my hips

Musta been smoke and neon
Made the mood just right
My rough and rowdy friends
Who come alive each night

I sure don’t need no preacher man
Guide me to right from wrong
Just need a pedal steel
George Jones singin’ my song

‘Cause they’re closin’ down the honky tonks
Can’t find no juke box
Nobody two-steps ‘round here
All the bars are made for jocks

Well, I never been to Texas
Maybe once on a bus
But I feel just like a pilgrim
Wanderin’ that desert of dust

And maybe in some other movie
I punched cattle or drilled for crude
Me, I like my pearl snap shirts
Lookin’ like a dude

Don’t tell me a phony
It sure feels real to me
A cosmic-anarchist-cowboy’s
What I really wanna be

‘Cause they’re closin’ down the honky tonks
Don’t play Hank no more
Lefty felt just too left out
He went on out that door

They’re closin’ down the honky tonks
Can’t find no juke box
Nobody two-steps ‘round here
All the bars are made for jocks

But we’ll put on our finest shirts
Pass the beer on ‘round
Honky tonk it one more night
‘Fore they drive us underground

So go on and tell mama
Can’t take her advice
‘Cause growin’ up to be a cowboy
You know it just feels real nice
